Ingredients

For the Chocolate Cake Layers

  • 1 1/2 cups powdered sugar
  • 3–4 tablespoons milk
  • 1 teaspoon vanilla extract

How to Make Chocolate Caramel Layer Cake

1. Bake the Chocolate Cake

  1. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C). Grease and line two 8-inch round cake pans.
  2. In a large bowl, whisk flour, sugar, cocoa, baking powder, baking soda, and salt.
  3. In another bowl, mix oil, eggs, vanilla, and buttermilk.
  4. Combine wet and dry ingredients, then stir in hot water until smooth.
  5. Divide batter between pans and bake for 25–30 minutes, or until a toothpick comes out clean.
  6. Let cakes cool completely.

2. Make the Caramel Filling

  1. In a medium saucepan over medium heat, melt sugar until golden brown, stirring occasionally.
  2. Carefully add butter, stirring until melted and combined.
  3. Slowly pour in heavy cream and stir until smooth. Let cool slightly before using.

3. Prepare the Chocolate Frosting

  1. Beat butter until creamy.
  2. Sift in cocoa and powdered sugar alternately with milk.
  3. Add vanilla and beat until smooth and spreadable.

4. Assemble the Cake

  1. Place one cake layer on a serving plate. Spread half the caramel filling over it.
  2. Top with the second cake layer and spread remaining caramel if desired.
  3. Frost the entire cake with chocolate frosting.
  4. Optional: Drizzle a little extra caramel on top for a beautiful finish.
